Goodbye to 2020 and what a hell of a year that was. One thing is for certain that the online world is continually changing and has changed in ways that none of us saw coming. So what will 2021 bring?
In our first journal entry for 2021, we’ve covered several growing online trends to help you get a head start on your digital and social strategies for the new year! In the wise words of High School Musical, it is time to get your head in the game #zacefron
2021 will see more and more brands embracing e-commerce personalisation that is tailored to their audiences. No longer do consumers want to shop with brands that aren’t informed and don’t understand their needs. They expect brands to know what they’ve bought from them in the past, and then use this shared data (collected from multiple platforms) to determine what they should buy next. In other words, this means brands are telling consumers what they want, when they want it and how they’ll get it.
To keep up with these trends and changes, brands need to start using the data they are collecting in a meaningful and personalised way, such as predicting what their customers want to see next, and when they’ll want to buy it. By using the data already being collected brands are able to influence and in turn ‘control’ the ways in which their audiences and customers interact and engage with their brand.
The data shows it works. A recent report by Accenture shows that 91% of consumers are more likely to purchase from companies who remember them and provide relevant offers.
E-commerce personalisation makes the customers feel important and improves their shopping experiences which means loyal customers and high conversion rates, it is really a win-win for everybody.
Shopping via Social Media
Long gone are the days where social media is simply used as a platform to stay connected with your friends and admire influences. Social media has grown exponentially over the last few years, not only increasing the platforms in which it operates but also how consumers engage with it.
Social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram are stepping up their game and making it easier than ever for consumers to purchase products without even leaving the platform. These integrations and changes create a seamless experience from first discovery to purchasing.
Our prediction is that In order for retail brands to grow in 2021, they will need to adapt to these platforms and think outside their regular checkout methods (aka their website). In other words, the more platforms to sell your product through = more potential customers.
Augmented Reality (AR)
With so many people stuck at home during the pandemic last year and combined with now (AKA whatever the heck is happening in 2021) being unable to walk into stores to make purchases, online shopping was booming at an all-time high.
Due to this, the world of online shopping will continue to change over the course of 2021 and the next. Augmented reality already allows individuals to try on products virtually (through Instagram filters) or an entire range of products from stores such as clothing, makeup and accessories to see whether or not the product fulfils their demands. Not only does this provide a unique shopping experience, but it also benefits retailers with faster purchasing and decreases product returns due to change of mind.
In 2020 we saw the rise of videos due to TikTok and Instagram Reels, and if it hasn’t become obvious to you already; videos are here to stay. There are a ton of different ways to grow your audience and boost engagement with video content, no matter the platform.
With the growing shift from desktop to mobile devices, video content makes it easier than ever to tap into markets all over the world. Consumers are also becoming more reliant on videos during their research phase of buying a product, rather than traditional methods such as browsing a website or looking at reviews.
Voice search has become a prominent trend in the past few years thanks to Siri and smart speakers. In 2021, it's predicted that voice search will grow even bigger and change the way we shop online. According to a recent survey done by Microsoft, more than 40% of participants had tried to make a purchase using their voice. It’s still in its early days, but brands need to pay attention to this growing trend.
